Climate Emergency: Why are electric vehicles the need of an hour?

By now, we all know that Chennai is reeling under the worst water crisis. If sources are to be trusted, about 21 Indian cities will run out of the water by 2020. It is not only about the climate but about the entire breadth of environmental issues that India is facing today. Talk about air pollution, growing water scarcity, water pollution, deforestation, extreme temperatures, etc. and we have them all.

This is not climate change but climate emergency.

Understanding Climate Emergency

Climate Emergency, as Carla Denyer says, is not just about reducing carbon emissions on a local scale, but also raising awareness about climate change and trying to convince the government so that changes can be made. Declaring a Climate Emergency means accepting that climate change has become a threat to human life and thus, to mobilize the national resources to reduce carbon emissions.

Going all-electric to tackle the Climate Emergency

Climate emergency is a dreadful situation. Nearly half a million people have urged the Indian Government to declare a ‘climate emergency’. It means we need an action plan to come out of this crisis.

During this time, electric vehicles seem to be the best option for commuting. Even the government aims to make India a 100% e-vehicle nation by 2030. As they run on electricity rather than conventional fuels, they offer varied benefits. Electric vehicles are better for the environment in many ways:

1.     No harmful emissions

We have been negatively impacting the environment since long. So, switching to electric vehicles like e-scooters or e-bikes is one way to reduce further damage to the planet. Conventional vehicles emit harmful greenhouse gases and accelerate climate change.

2.     Renewable energy

Electric vehicles can be fueled by electricity from renewable sources, such as wind, hydropower, and solar. Thus, electric vehicles are more eco-friendly than conventional vehicles. By choosing to own or rent an electric scooter, you reduce your carbon footprint and help preserve our natural environment.

3.     Less pollution

Electric vehicles do not emit any harmful gases as they run on electricity and not conventional fuel-run engines. The emissions from the vehicles are the biggest contributor to air pollution. Switching to electric scooters, bikes, and cars bring down the emission rates and thus, less pollution.
